Cold sores (otherwise known as herpetic lesions) are caused by the Herpes virus. The virus lies dormant inside a nerve cell until released into the surrounding tissues where it causes the lesion seen. Unlike most viral infections, Herpes outbreaks reoccur with regular frequency. The usual causes of an outbreak are stress and trauma (in particular, trauma from sunburn).

Most people will get a tingling or burning sensation in the area where a lesion is about to form. Valtrex (or Acyclovir) is very helpful at this stage to minimize the outbreak of the lesion and expedite healing. For some who have very high recurrence rates, Acyclovir can be taken daily to suppress or minimize the number of outbreaks.

A new and very effective option is the use of laser energy. Lesions treated with a laser rarely reoccur. If the laser is used at an early stage (tingling sensation), the likelihood of developing the lesion is minimal. If the lesion is present when treated, it will cease to progress any further and begins to heal comfortably, usually within a matter of days instead of weeks. Most importantly, the lesion will reoccur with less frequency and intensity at the same location.

Please contact us today to schedule an appointment or get answers to your questions.
